The Burren

The Burren landscape, which covers over 100 square miles, is situated in the north of County Clare on the western coast of Ireland. Many visitors seeing it for the first time have described it as visually resembling a moonscape, yet it shelters flora & archaeological sites, which have attracted visitors for centuries. The Burren was under a tropical ocean as far back as 360 million years ago. Then along came the Ice Age, which ploughed through the region, widening the river valleys and deposition boulder clay. Man appeared on the scene comparitively lately, a mere 6,000 years ago. He cleared forests and duly set in motion the soil erosion which ultimately has resulted in today's unique landscape. The Fame of the Burren is in its rock garden, shoreline and limestone fissures. Grassland and Hazelwoods also yield an abundant and unique set of flora. The wealth of attractions are contained within this magic region of Ireland, making a short walking holiday a hugely enjoyable experience for the enthusiast and leisure walker alike. Scenery, geology, botany, wildlife, archaeology - all can be enjoyed although most are hidden. What can be more relaxing than watching the mammals and birdlife of this beautiful region. |
